PROGRAM STANDARDS |
1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the
historical, philosophical, and legal foundations of education of
students with disabilities including:
- federal entitlements that relate to the provision of
specialized equipment and materials for learners who are deaf and hard
of hearing
- array of service options
- educational definitions, identification criteria, labeling
issues and current incidence and prevalence figures.

2. Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of
models and theories of typical and atypical growth and behavior across
age groups, and philosophies that provide the foundation of research
based special education practice. |
3. Students will demonstrate understanding of current
identification criteria and legal and educational definitions. |
4. Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of
the characteristics of cognitive, behavior, physical/health disabled
students; the impact of disability on academic and educational
functioning and the impact of health and medical issues on family,
neighborhood, local schools and other social networks. |
5. Students will demonstrate understanding of the
physiological aspects of deafness and hearing loss and the implication
of corrective measures for instruction including:
- interpretation of audiological assessment data
- etiology
- age of onset
- anatomy and physiology of the hearing mechanism
- degrees/types of hearing loss

6. Students will demonstrate skills in the selection,
administration, evaluation and interpretation of formal and informal
assessment tools and methods for determining individual profiles of
students. |
7. Students will develop and demonstrate an understanding of
Planning for transitions
through the lifespan of students including the
entitlement to services during school years and the eligibility
requirements of the adult service continuum. |
8. Students will develop an understanding of the deaf
community and rudimentary sign language skills. |
9. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the
demographics, etiology, incidence rates and programming considerations
for various developmental disabilities. |
10. Students will be proficient in current technology and
software for special needs persons. |
11. The student will become aware of and/or involved with
professional organizations, the professional literature, and other
resources and advocacy groups. |
12. The student will deport him/herself with integrity and
ethical and professional conduct as stated in Pennsylvania's
Code of
Professional Practice and Conduct for Educators; and local,
state and federal laws. |
13.The student will communicate effectively (orally and in
writing) with students, colleagues, families, paraprofessionals,
related service personnel, administrators, agencies and the community. |
14.The student will establish and maintain collaborative
relationships with basic and higher education colleagues, families and
the community agencies to meet the needs of diverse learners. |
