Art Education, BSED

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Art Education Program is offered by the Department of Art and Art Education located in the College of Fine Arts . The mission of the Art Education program is to prepare students to become competent teachers and educational leaders by:
- Learning and applying principles of scholarship
- Uncovering problems and creative solutions in the areas of instruction, curriculum and assessment
- Demonstrating competency in the disciplines of Art Studio, Art History, Art Criticism, and Aesthetics
- Inculcating professional characteristics of sincerity, integrity, and responsibility as it pertains to the study and practice of Art Education
These goals are accomplished in a variety of ways:

Students take 125 credits of undergraduate coursework at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) in the areas of Liberal Studies, Education, Studio Art, Art History and Art Education. Through this broad foundation, as well as formal and informal field experiences and student teaching, Art Education majors are well prepared as artists and art teachers to become competent professionals and lifelong learners.

Art Education faculty and cooperating art teachers in area schools in Western Pennsylvania have close relationships and collaborate on many educational projects, as well as jointly train and assess student teachers in art.

The Art Education program reflects the standards for art teacher preparation adopted by the National Art Education Association, the National Standards for Art Education, and the Pennsylvania Standards for Art Education. It also is a part of the IUP model for teacher education adopted by the College of Education and the Teacher Education Coordinating Committee (TECC), consisting of faculty representatives from all the disciplines at IUP that have an education component, professional education faculty and administrators in the College of Education.
