Master of Arts in Teaching English, MA/TE

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Master of Arts in Teaching English (MA/TE) Program is offered in response to national studies of teacher training that focus on the value of research on teaching literature, composition, and language through academic course work and supervised internship experiences. One of four M.A. degrees offered by The Graduate Studies in English at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the MA/TE program is located within The College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The IUP College of Education and Educational Technology provides students in the MA/TE program with requisite courses in assessment of learning, educational psychology, and teaching exceptional children at the graduate level.

The MA/TE program is grounded in a social constructionist view of knowledge and learning with emphasis on:

- a reader-response approach to the teaching of literature,
- a process/workshop approach to the teaching of writing, and
- the study of language in context of reading and writing.

Classes within the program are taught in a manner aligned with current theory of the best teaching practices so that students can learn to teach by example.

Candidates in this program are expected to meet all of the Pennsylvania Department of Education standards for secondary English certification as well as the standards set by the National Council of Teachers of English.
