PROGRAM STANDARDS
I. Standards for the English Language Arts
A. Have a broad knowledge and understanding of multicultural language and literature and are prepared to teach in schools with diverse populations.
B. Introduce and develop problem-posing and problem-solving strategies in their classrooms.
C. Know how to incorporate technology and use technology as a tool for improving and enhancing English Education and communications.
D. Are leaders and model effective leadership in and outside the classroom.
E. Advocate and incorporate interdisciplinary studies and projects.
F. Create classroom environments where all students can learn by using multiple instructional strategies and adapting instruction for individual needs.
G. Are reflective practitioners.
H. Take an active role in the community and invite the community into their classrooms.
I. Are lifelong learners and grow professionally, contributing something valuable to society.
II. English Education Minimal Teaching Field Outcomes
A. Engage students in the social construction of knowledge.
B. Establishes optimum conditions for learning.
C. Models effective literacy practices.
D. Demonstrates active involvement in the profession of teaching English.
E. Demonstrates understanding of literature and the ways students transact with literature to construct meaning.
F. Demonstrates understanding of the social and cognitive processes involved in reading.
G. Demonstrates understanding of language structure and its role in reading and writing.
H. Demonstrates understanding of the role of oral communication in the classroom.
I. Demonstrates appropriate use of media in the English classroom.
